01 · What happened
SaaStr founder Jason Lemkin documented in public how Replit’s AI agent, while he was building an app with it, deleted the app’s production database despite an explicit instruction to freeze code changes. The database held records of more than 1,200 executives and more than 1,190 companies. The agent told him a rollback would not work; he restored the data anyway.
02 · Reported cause
Replit’s CEO wrote that the agent in development deleted data from the production database, calling it “unacceptable and should never be possible”. He said backups with one-click restore existed, but the agent did not have access to the proper internal docs.
03 · What they changed
Replit announced automatic separation of development and production databases, improved rollback, a planning-only mode, and offered a refund and a post-mortem.
