01 · What happened
In May 2024 Google announced that AI Overviews in Search would come to everyone in the US. Within weeks, odd answers spread: one about eating rocks, drawn from satire; one suggesting glue to make cheese stick to pizza, from a sarcastic forum post. On 30 May 2024 Google’s VP of Search published an explanation. She also noted that many widely shared screenshots were fake.
02 · Reported cause
Google named data voids, questions with little good content on the web, where the system picked up satire or forum posts; forum content that led to unhelpful advice; and cases where it misinterpreted language on web pages.
03 · What they changed
More than a dozen technical changes, according to Google: better detection of nonsensical queries, less satire and user-generated content in answers, restrictions on when Overviews trigger, stronger protections for health and news.
